DEGREES Professor Kivipelto is originally from Finland and is the principal investigator for the world-leading Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability. Known as the FINGER study, it was the first large scale trial that showed multi-domain lifestyle-based interventions can reduce the risk of cognitive and Miia Kivipelto, MD, PhD, is Professor in Clinical Geriatrics at Karolinska Institutet (KI), Center for Alzheimer Research and senior geriatrician and Director for Research & Development of Theme Aging at Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden. Part of her Nordic Brain Network multidisciplinary research team (around 100 Miia Kivipelto, PhD, is most interested in preventive measures in medicine, an area in which Swedish and Finnish researchers are global leaders. The FINGER* study, which Kivipelto led, was the world's first large multidimensional study of lifestyle interventions.

Between Sept 7, 2009, and Nov 24, 2011, we screened 2654 individuals and randomly assigned 1260 to the intervention group (n=631) or control group (n=629). 591 (94%) participants in the intervention group and 599 (95%) in the control group had at least one post-baseline assessment and were included in the modified intention-to-treat analysis. Recently, a Finnish study known as FINGER (Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and isability)D led by Dr. Miia Kivipelto showed that a two-year combination of lifestyle intervention approaches including physical exercise, a healthy diet, cognitive stimulation, and monitoring of heart health risk factors - Professor Miia Kivipelto och docent Maris Hartmanis står bakom initiativet till det nya forskningsinstitutet för hjärnhälsa, Fingers Brain Health Institute.Institutet kommer att lokaliseras World Wide FINGERS has been established by Professor Miia Kivipelto who is closely collaborating with various research groups worldwide.
